Mark is the founder and Head Coach of Ballarat Gold.
James Meddings
Junior Development Coach
James is a senior swimmer and junior development coach.
James commenced his competitive swimming career at the age of 12 with Ballarat GCO. He now swims for Ballarat Gold and has competed at all levels, including at Nationals. James is also a member of the WestVic Academy of Sport.James began his coaching career at the age of 17 with the Mark Stahl Swim School, where he still coaches. In addition to working with Ballarat Gold, James also coaches at Ballarat & Clarendon College. James is in his final year of an Exercise and Sport Science Degree at Federation University.
James loves coaching and is grateful for everything that he has learnt over the years with Ballarat Gold. He is passionate about swimming and pours his heart and soul into the development of future champions of the sport; both as people and as swimmers.
Emmerson Wood
Junior Development Coach
Emmerson is a senior swimmer and junior development coach.
Emmerson joined BGOLD as a swimmer at the age of 14, making the commitment to travel from Maryborough, showing her undeniable passion for swimming.As a coach, Emmerson brings a perfect blend of toughness and compassion. She’s not afraid to push her swimmers to be their best, and her dedication to their growth is unwavering. But beyond that, she’s a kind and caring soul who truly wants the best for each and every one of our swimmers. Emmerson’s smile is infectious, and her positive energy lights up the pool deck.
Mark Urquhart
Intermediate and Senior Squad Coach
Mark is an Intermediate and Senior Squad coach. Mark recently relocated to Ballarat from Horsham. He has competed in a variety of endurance/distance sports including Ironman triathlon, ultramarathons, multisport and marathon kayaking since the mid 1990’s.
Throughout this time he has been coached and mentored by some outstanding people who invested their time, knowledge, and experience. As a coach, he endeavours to teach, motivate, and guide with the same qualities and attributes that afforded him longevity and fulfilment in sport.
When not on pooldeck, he can be found supporting his sons in their sporting endeavours and as a technical specialist in fire and emergency management.
Abbey Pierce
Junior Development &
Special Olympics Coach
Abbey is a senior swimmer and junior development coach.
Abbey is a dedicated and passionate coach who shares her love of swimming and success through coaching the Special Olympics, Pam Toom, Belinda Walton, and Ross Loader squads.Abbey first joined Ballarat Gold in 2014 as a swimmer and understands the unique and diverse journey of competitive swimming. She brings a wealth of experience, and her commitment extends far beyond the pool working as an Education Support Worker.
Abbey encourages every swimmer to shine and tailors her programs to meet everyone’s needs. Her dedication and nurturing spirit continue to shape the lives of everyone here at Ballarat Gold Swimming Club.

Mark is a senior swimmer and junior development coach.
Mark first embraced the world of competitive swimming in 1986 after racing for a number of years in Victorian Country Lifesaving events. From racing the iconic Lorne Pier to Pub every year since 1994 to seizing glory at Victorian Country Championships, Royal Life Saving Society State Titles, and even the prestigious World Masters Championships, Mark loves every aspect of swimming.After dabbling in Long distance Triathlon and Adventure races, his heart finds its rhythm in freestyle sprinting, and his influence extends far beyond the water’s edge. With a dedication spanning generations, he’s coached swimmers of all ages, nurturing juniors and seniors alike.
Mark’s passion for swimming isn’t just physical, he’s delved into research, crafting a thesis on diving techniques that harnessed the innovative swimming block with handles, showcasing his commitment to pushing the boundaries of the sport.
Mark’s journey intertwined with numerous swimming clubs, where he absorbed wisdom from accomplished coaches.
He is loving his coaching with Ballarat Gold, and he looks forward to seeing each and every swimmer grow through the sport.
Josh Stott
Junior Development Coach
Josh is a senior swimmer and junior development coach.
Josh started swimming competitively in 1990 and retired in 2008. He has swam at the highest level, and qualified to compete at the 2000 Olympic Trials.Josh has returned to swimming after a 15 year break, not only to watch his sons race, but also to help others achieve their dreams and goals. He enjoys giving to others, what Swimming has given to him.
Away from the pool, Josh is a Registered Nurse, with a passion for education and professional development.
