Today was the day Max had eagerly awaited. He competed in his pet event, the 100m backstroke, and his nerves were certainly apparent. However, he exceeded his own expectations by finishing 5th with an incredible 2.48 personal best time. We couldn’t be more elated for him, especially considering his bonus personal best in the 50m freestyle. This has truly been an amazing meet for Max and he has made the most of every opportunity. We can’t wait to see him back here next year.
Marley, you are absolutely incredible. Your ability to excel in distance events as well as other races is mind-blowing. Of all the events you participated in during this championship, the 1500m freestyle stands out in our memory. It was a bittersweet moment as you narrowly missed out on 1st place by 0.02 seconds, despite commanding the race from about lap 3. Your gallant effort resulted in a 4.83-second personal best. We couldn’t be prouder and are in complete awe of you. You truly embody the spirit of a champion. And to top it all off, you found the strength to compete in the 100m backstroke final as well. Your determination and resilience are truly admirable.
Grace, your determination paid off as you refused to leave without an individual final. Today was the day you showcased your talent, pulling off a stunning 6.16-second personal best in the 100m backstroke to qualify 8th in the final. Though the final didn’t go as planned, it was still a valuable experience for you to have your first morning heat and night final. Hold your head high, as that was still the second fastest you have ever swum that event.
And the smiles and dancing on the blocks that followed in the 200m medley relay were infectious. You, along with Blake, Bryce, and Elle, rocked the pool with incredible speed. Finishing first in your heat.
Elle, your performances in the finals continued to impress us all. While your improvement in the 100m backstroke was commendable, it was the 50m freestyle that had us screaming you on. It looked like yours to win from the 20m mark, but your leg gave up in the last 5m and despite the nail-biting finish, you ended up placing 6th. Nevertheless, you should be pleased to come away with an improving long-course time. Your determination and progress are truly inspiring.
Bryce, you have undoubtedly had an outstanding meet. You have risen to every challenge and exceeded expectations. Though you may be disappointed to have just missed out on a final race in the 100m backstroke and 50m freestyle, it was your performance in the 200m breaststroke that left us in awe of your brilliance. Dropping a staggering 22.15 seconds from your entry time to place 4th showed the incredible progress you have made. Your talent is undeniable.
Blake, what a meet you have had! Your dedication is unparalleled, and it has shown in your performances. Making it to all the finals and achieving personal bests across the board is a remarkable feat. You gave it your all in the 200m breaststroke, finishing in 2nd place, missing out on 2nd by a mere 0.02 seconds. Your determination and lion-like spirit shone through in every stroke.
Cooper, by choosing to focus on your finals and forgoing the 1500m, you did not disappoint. You continued to make an impact with a 2nd place finish in the 100m backstroke and a 1st place finish in the 50m freestyle, both with significant time improvements. Your performance throughout the meet has been outstanding, and we are delighted to announce that you have been awarded the Boys 17&O Age Champion title. Congratulations! Your hard work and dedication have truly paid off.
A special mention must also go out to Celina, who stepped in as ‘coach’. She has been instrumental in keeping this team together and ensuring they are well-prepared for each race. Her guidance and support have been invaluable, and we are incredibly grateful to have her here with us.
As we wrap up these four days of competition, we cannot stress enough how invaluable this experience has been for our swimmers. They have not only exceeded their own expectations, but they have also formed lasting friendships with swimmers from around the country. They have shown tremendous support for one another, and their achievements go beyond the pool. We are immensely proud of each and every one of them.
